Oud (also spelled oudh, and known as agarwood) is a dark, resinous material formed when agar trees respond to infection. Real oud smells woody, smoky, leathery and faintly animalic; it is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, so most modern fragrances use an oud accord built from synthetic and natural woods.

In Middle Eastern perfumery oud is often the centre of the fragrance, worn heavily and paired with rose, saffron or amber. Western designer and niche houses tend to use it as an accent: a smoky, woody base under citrus, spice or vanilla that makes a fragrance feel richer.

Oud fragrances are usually strong and long-lasting, so start with one or two sprays. They are especially good for cooler weather and evenings, and they are some of the best fragrances to layer, because a little oud underneath gives a lighter scent depth and staying power.
