In perfume, amber is not fossilised tree resin and not ambergris. It is an accord, a blend usually built from labdanum, benzoin, vanilla and other resins, that smells warm, golden, slightly sweet and powdery.

Is amber the same as ambergris or ambroxan?

No. Ambergris is a rare marine material with a salty, musky smell, and ambroxan is a woody-ambery molecule inspired by it. Amber in perfume usually means the warm resinous accord described on this page.

When should I wear an amber fragrance?

Amber fragrances are best in autumn and winter and in the evening, when their warmth feels comfortable. Lighter amber scents with citrus or musk can work year-round.
