How to mix perfumes in 5 steps
- Choose a lead and an accent. The lead is the scent you want people to recognize; the accent adds one thing the lead lacks: brightness, sweetness, warmth or freshness.
- Check for a shared note. Pairs that share vanilla, sandalwood, cedar, musk, amber, bergamot or jasmine blend smoothly. With no overlap at all, the two scents tend to sit side by side instead of merging.

Mistakes to avoid when mixing perfumes
- Mixing three or more scents before you know how two behave. Most great combinations are just two fragrances.
- Equal sprays of two strong scents. Neither leads, so the blend smells muddy. Let one fragrance clearly lead.
- Putting the fresh scent underneath. Citrus evaporates in minutes; buried under a heavy scent, it disappears.
- Testing on paper only. Blotters show the opening, but skin warmth and chemistry decide how the mix really develops.
- Combining liquids in one bottle. It wastes both perfumes and can't be undone. Mix on skin instead.
Do mixed perfumes last longer?
