The confusion around "cologne"

"Cologne" is one of the most misused terms in fragrance. In common usage — particularly in North America — it has come to mean any fragrance marketed to men. In its precise meaning, it refers to a specific concentration of fragrance in alcohol and water.

What "cologne" actually means

Eau de Cologne (EdC) is a concentration of approximately 2–5% aromatic compounds in alcohol. It originates from the city of Cologne, Germany, where a specific light, citrus-forward formula was first produced in the early 18th century. A true eau de cologne is light, fresh, and short-lived — typically lasting 1–2 hours on skin.

Fragrance concentrations from lightest to most intense

  • Eau de Cologne (EdC): 2–5% aromatic concentration. Fresh, light, short-lasting.
  • Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5–15% concentration. The standard for most everyday fragrances. Typically lasts 3–5 hours.
  • Eau de Parfum (EdP): 15–20% concentration. Richer, longer-lasting. Typically 6–8 hours.
  • Parfum / Extrait: 20–40% concentration. The most intense and longest-lasting form. Can last all day.

Why the distinction matters for layering

When layering two fragrances with different concentrations, the more concentrated fragrance will generally dominate longer into the dry-down. An Eau de Parfum layered over an Eau de Toilette will eventually outlast the EdT, potentially changing the character of the combination as the day progresses. This isn't a problem if you account for it — but it's worth knowing that a layered mix changes over time, not just at first spray.

Perfume vs. body spray (and body mist)

A body spray or body mist is the lightest fragrance format of all, usually around 1–3% fragrance oil in a lot of water and alcohol. That makes it cheaper per bottle and easy to spray all over, but it typically lasts only 1–2 hours and sits close to the skin. Perfume (eau de parfum or parfum) has far more fragrance oil, so it smells richer, develops through top, heart and base notes, and lasts most of the day.

  • Body spray / body mist: about 1–3% oil. Light, fresh, 1–2 hours. Great for layering, the gym, hot days or a quick refresh.
  • Eau de toilette: 5–15%. Brighter and lighter than perfume, 3–5 hours.
  • Eau de parfum / perfume: 15–20%. Fuller and longer-lasting, 6–8 hours or more.

Many brands now sell the same scent in several strengths. Sol de Janeiro's Cheirosa 62 comes as a perfume mist, a stronger intense mist and a full eau de parfum, which shows the jump in richness and staying power clearly. More in our Sol de Janeiro guide.

Best of both: spray a body mist all over after a shower, then one or two sprays of a matching or complementary perfume on pulse points. The mist adds an all-over halo; the perfume gives it staying power.

Perfume vs. cologne vs. eau de toilette: quick answer

All three are the same thing at different strengths. "Perfume" usually means eau de parfum or parfum (the strongest), "eau de toilette" is the mid-strength everyday version, and true "cologne" (eau de cologne) is the lightest. In everyday American English, though, "cologne" simply means a fragrance for men, whatever its strength, and "perfume" means one for women. The bottle's label (EDC, EDT, EDP or Parfum) tells you the real strength.

Perfume vs. cologne FAQ

Is cologne the same as perfume? Technically cologne is a lighter, weaker concentration. In everyday use it just means a men's fragrance, and many men's "colognes" are actually eau de toilette or eau de parfum.

Can women wear cologne and men wear perfume? Yes. Gender labels are marketing; what matters is whether you like how it smells on you. Browse our best unisex fragrances for scents made for anyone.

Which lasts longer, perfume or cologne? Perfume. Eau de parfum and parfum contain several times more fragrance oil than eau de cologne, so they last hours longer.

Is body spray or perfume better? Perfume lasts longer and smells richer; body spray is lighter, cheaper and better for all-over freshness. Many people use both, mist first and perfume on top.

Why is perfume more expensive than body spray? It contains much more fragrance oil, and often more expensive raw materials, so you pay for concentration and staying power.
